ComputerWeekly.com reports that:

About half of senior business managers are failing to take advantage of Web 2.0 technologies because of a lack of understanding, according to research.

Rob Banathy, client relationship manager at Parity Solutions, said the majority of organisations are simply buying what they perceive to be the latest document management and search technologies, rather than adopting Web 2.0 technology to achieve a new way of working.

This is a space I have done quite a bit of work in as a technology and knowledge management evangelist. There are a lot of important concepts that web 2.0 can bring to business, but dollars and sense prevail. Unless business can see bottom line impacts as a result they will be reluctant to invest.

The change management around web 2.0 architecture is also mostly social. People already work in knowledge management rich environments, but generally do things they way they always have. Changing involves training, standing alongside and sometimes forcing users to adopt new ways of managing and processing information.
Why should businesses and individuals change the way they work? Many Web 2.0 applications offer a richer, more immersive experience with data. instead of users just creating documents and data in isolation, they can be more integrated in a collaborative approach. often this is done now using email as the medium, however there are many better ways. Technology can be harnessed to make the experience of collaborative knowledge construction more fulfilling for individuals, and more useful for organisations. Along with the productivity gains that can be found in time, hard drive space and bandwidth from using technology more efficiently, these can be compelling reasons for organisations to pursue the implementation of web 2.0 type applications in the workplace.
